The concept of slow fashion and sustainable fashion is taking over the fashion retail world. A lot of brands and companies have considered this an important decision in their production and operations. What this means is that the directors and employees of such companies are being educated on what it means to actually have an impact in the lives of everyone involved in the process.I caught up with Michelle Johnson, the creative director and owner of Kenyan clothing brand, One Hundred Years to learn more about her brand and her thoughts on sustainable fashion . With the impact of globalization, we see more international brands and local brands take part in the movement. Where brands from different countries are considering ways that they can make their brands eco-friendlier and overall more sustainable.
F.A: How long have you been running One Hundred Years? Was this something that you had always wanted to do?
M.J: I come from a long line generation of tailors, I learnt how to sew at the age of 7. I always made clothes for myself, my dolls and it was something I have always been passionate about through the years. Setting up One Hundred Years took one year, because I had to get everything right. It has currently been operating for one year.
F.A: Tell us about your products.
M.J: I am keen on every detail and it comes down to the pieces we create. I ensure that every piece is identical and something special about One Hundred Years is that the bits and pieces are made sustainably. For instance, the buttons which are custom designed are from Madagascar and I ensure that I visit the factories to have an idea of what actually goes into making the pieces. Some of the cotton we use for our t-shirts and henleys are from Uganda. For some fabrics, I have them custom made, for instance some of our shirts are made specifically for the Kenyan market, where it gets hot and cold anytime of the day.
F.A: Why One Hundred Years?
M.J: The name reflects what we do; what will matter in one hundred years. We believe that consuming in a sustainable way will be crucial for our future. When you purchase an item from One Hundred Years, you can wear it for a long time. You will also be supporting Cotton made in Africa-Initiative. We also consider the health of the consumers and buyers , unlike other products that induce hormones , all our clothing is good for consumers and good for nature.
